The function of the mining engineer is to apply knowledge of pertinent scientific theory, engineering fundamentals, and improved technology to recover natural resources. Mining is a world-wide activity involving the extraction of non-metallic, metal ores of all kinds, and solid fuel and energy sources such as coal and nuclear materials. In addition to mineral extraction, the skills of mining engineers are also needed in the construction industry; with its requirements of developing earth (rock) systems, tunnels and underground chambers, and the hazardous waste disposal industry are examples of such applications. The mining engineering graduate is qualified for positions in engineering, supervision, and research

Dr. Deepak Pandey Head & Assistant Professor Department of Mining Engineering completed his B. E. (Topper) in Mining & M. tech (Topper) in Mine Planning from College of Technology & Engineering, Udaipur (top State Government University); he is having 10+ years of Teaching and Industrial Experience.

He worked in Vedanta Group (Sesa Goa), Datamine Software, Ultratech Cement Ltd. College of Technology & Engineering and S.S. College of Engineering. He published nine technical papers in reputed journals and guided Six M. tech Scholar’s and he is also an organising member of Mining Engineer Association of India, Udaipur Chapter. His specialisation is in mine planning and designing using Datamine Software, Surface Mining, Computer application in Mining,

Mine Development,Metal Mining, also he has done the Mine planning consultancy for the Ultra-tech Cement Ltd., Wonder Cement and many more renowned companies and one of the top experts in Datamine Software throughout India. Passed XII std or its equivalent examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of the Chemistry or Biotechnology or Biology or Technical Vocational subject or Computer Science or Information Technology or Informatics Practices or Agriculture or Engineering Graphics or Business Studies and obtained at least 50 % marks (at least 40 % marks, in case of Backward Class categories, Economically Weaker Section and Persons with Disability) in the above subjects taken together.

Ankit Naval was one of the brightest students in the department of mining engineering and also the topper of his batch. He belongs to small city but has a passion to achieve his dream. When he started his journey in SPSU he was very shy and not very confident. During his tenure in SPSU, he was groomed himself by the effort of the faculty and his hard work. As the part of the university curriculum, every year he was assigned with endeavor project, wherein he learnt how to convert a problem into a new case study and then to solve the problem in a structured manner. He also learned how to present a case study and presentation skill. During his stay in SPSU, he got the field exposure by visiting different opencast and underground mines and developed networking with the people from the industry and developed his inter personnel communication skill. During the visit he learned the Spirit of team work and inculcates the habit of lifelong learning for achieving professional excellence.

Lokendra Singh Deora belongs to a family having Marble Mining business. His father was of the opinion to involve him either in his family or was his dream to set up a new “Startup”. Contrary to his father, his dream was to crack a competitive exam and join the government or PSU organization. His dream was realized to reality with the support of faculty and his hard work. The experienced and dedicated faculty started his mentoring from the first year to make his dream into reality. He was not only developed in the academic field was mentored to develop his leadership quality. He was member of various clubs and was captain of cricket and volleyball team. Mining Engineering is a diverse degree/career which has gained acceptance from aspiring engineers who want to do something different from core engineering. As part of the degree, student get to study elements of many different disciplines, networking events with people from the industry and field trips to visit different mines.  It is also a career which isn’t stuck in an office and gives lots of opportunities to work outside in different environments that aren’t an option for other programs.

Faculty members of the department of Mining Engineering have specialization in Underground Coal & Metal Mining, Mine Planning & Design, Computer Applications in Mining, Mining Machinery, Rock Mechanics, Dimensional Stone Technology etc.

The department of Mining Engineering has the laboratories for Mining Geology, Mine Computation, Metal Mining, Rock Mechanics & Ground Control, Ventilation, Mine Surveying, and are well equipped with the conventional and modern facilities. The department is also provided with Mine Model Lab equipped for demonstration, experimental and research purposes.

Most mining engineers are employed as a Mines Manager by coal or metal mining companies like CIL, SAIL, SCCL, Tata Steel, NLC, Aditya Birla, NMDC, NTPC, HZL, etc. in India or abroad or may get into teaching fields in colleges or universities. Some mining engineers are also self-employed and have started their own mining companies or setup a mining consultancy firm.
There are also opportunities for mining engineers beyond the national boundary. Countries in the Middle East like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait provide excellent job opportunities for good mining engineers. Australia is currently facing a crisis with respect to workforce related to mining.
